Eggs Benedict @ Borough

Eggs Benedict @ Borough

Borough is a small kind of hole in the wall in Bed-Stuy that serves brunch every day until 3pm. The space is small and has more of a feel of a bar, and has only one bartender/waitress serving customers. We went early after opening and there was only one other table was taken so the service was fine, but reviews online indicate a different story once it fills up. The actual benedict was pretty standard in terms of elements, but here's how they rated.

Base: English muffin. The menu says it was toasted, but I'm not sure that it actually was. It got soggy pretty quickly, in one area, just from a potato sitting on it. Some bites were ok, but others were just limp and falling apart so disappointing.
Score: 3

Non-Egg Protein: Canadian bacon. I would say this layer was the star of the benedict, which is weird for such a standard, "normal" benedict. The ham slices were thick enough on their own, but each stack had 2 slices. There was so much meat on this and it was tasty as well.
Score: 5

Eggs: Meh. The gifs are a little deceiving because it looks like there was a lot of yolk running out of the egg, but that was pretty much the extent of what was runny. There were thick walls of yolk and there wasn't enough to give great coverage to the rest of the dish. The whites felt overdone as well, nearing the consistency of a hard boiled egg. I guess the only good thing was that they were both of the same cook level, but when that level is overdone, it's not a great positive.
Score: 6

It looks good, but it went downhill once cut more

Yes, that's a bif piece of yolk on the knife...*sad trombone*

Sauce: Hollandaise. I have no idea what it was, but there was something very off about this sauce. It did not have the usual hollandaise taste but I couldn't identify the flavor that was there. The consistency was also not good and turned gloppy as soon as it cooled. There was also a film that formed on the top that was obvious whenever it was disturbed. Not appealing.
Score: 2

Sides: Salad and potatoes. There was a good amount of greens on the plate and they had a good dressing, if a little too much. The potatoes were mushy in a good way and seasoned well so that was also nice to have on the side. Solid sides, even if the benedict itself wasn't all that great.
Score: 4

Bonus: None.

Total Score: 20/30
